The photos on this site are available to purchase for personal use. The copies of photos displayed here are lower resolution copies than the originals with the intention of making them faster to load when viewed on the web. This means that small copies (5x7) will print OK but large versions will come out poor quality.
The purchase rates are not the same for commercial use and if you would like to use any of the images displayed here for publication please email me to discuss rates. |

A little information about the cameras and lenses used to take the photos on this site.
Cameras
I got my first good quality camera Christmas 1983 (a Pentax MG) and took my first photos January 1984. Initially the light meter was incorrectly set on the camera but with my inexperience I did not realise this and spent 2 years taking mostly dark pictures. Once I had worked this out the photos got much better. I used this camera until 1990 when it was stolen on a train between Manchester and Leeds. Fell asleep. This was most annoying to say the least as I had spent previous 2 days roaming the network (on an All Line Rover). This camera containted pictures of the 1923 and 1938 London Underground stock operating together on the Isle of Wight, which can never be repeated. I then purchased a Pentax P30N which I still own and in mid 2007 I converted to a digital DSLR moving to a Pentax K10D as I now believe digital has caught up with real film.
Lenses
The MG had a standard 50mm
The P30N came with a 28mm - 70mm zoom and I bought a standard 50mm
I also have a Miranda 75mm - 300mm zoom used with both cameras
The K10D has a 18mm - 55mm zoom and I have a Sigma 70mm to 300mm zoom but the focal lengths are multiplied by 1.5 because it is digital. The old lenses also will fit the digital camera so I continue to use the standard 50mm lens with the digital sometimes.
I have also taken a few digital photos with compact digital cameras between 2003 and 2007 and a few of these are shown here.
The equipment used to take the photos on this site are:
Jan 1984 - Jan 1990 Pentax MG (35mm Slides, scanned)
Jan 1990 - Oct 2007 Pentax P30N (35mm Slides, scanned)
Jan 2003 - Oct 2007 a few photos taken with various compact digital cameras
Oct 2007 - Present Pentax K10D (Digital)
Unfortunately the scanning of the slides has lost some quality in the scanning process and they are not as sharp as the originals.
The images displayed represent my memories of travel by train since 1984 and are catagorised by the year in which they were taken. I hope they bring you enjoyment too and show some of the younger viewers what type of trains existed in the past which have long since been melted down into razor blades.
There are two other sections not listed by year
"Learn from my mistakes". These are some of the mistake I have made with details of what the problem is with the image. I hope this section is of some use and helps you to improve. It is easier these days to see where you have gone wrong with the arrival of digital, as the results are visible straight away. This was much harder years ago as it was at least 2 weeks and sometimes 2 months between taking the picture and seeing the image and you could not remember what you had done by that stage.
I have had a few images published these are shown in the "Published Photographs" section. This is a small section with higher resolution copies of these images with the publication details.
I hope you enjoy the site. If you have any questions about the photos or locations drop me an email and I will do my best to answer them.
Thanks for visiting.
